Over 100 Sealed Coffins Found in Saqqara—Mummies Intact After 2,500 Years!

In one of the most significant archaeological finds of recent decades, Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities has announced the discovery of over 100 sealed wooden coffins in the Saqqara necropolis—just south of Cairo. These coffins, remarkably well-preserved despite being buried for more than 2,500 years, date back to Egypt’s Late Period (roughly 664–332 BCE).

Unearthed from deep burial shafts near the Step Pyramid of Djoser, the coffins are elaborately painted and many are sealed with original bindings intact. When opened, archaeologists found mummies in pristine condition, still wrapped in linen with visible facial features and in some cases, gold leaf masks still clinging to their faces. The craftsmanship, preservation, and sheer volume of the find have stunned experts.

🛕 Sacred Symbols and Funerary Statues

In addition to the coffins, dozens of finely crafted bronze and gilded wooden funerary statues were found. These likely represent ancient deities—such as Ptah-Sokar-Osiris—or perhaps the deceased individuals themselves. Amulets, ushabti figurines, and other ritual items were also discovered, providing deeper understanding of the religious and burial practices of the time.
